A new PLC-based smart metering architecture for medium/low voltage grids: Feasibility and experimental characterization

Abstract This paper investigates the feasibility of a smart metering architecture for modern power grids in the smart cities framework. A particular focus is made on Automatic Meter Reading, with the aim of facing some costs and safety drawbacks of current solutions (such as dependence from wireless communication providers, reliability problems in bad weather conditions, and exposition to cyber-attacks). Part 1: Cross-Domain Conference and Workshop on Multidisciplinary Research and Practice for Information Systems (CD-ARES 2013); International audience; Many Smart Grid installations rely on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) for wireless communication in Advanced Metering Infrastructures (AMI). In this paper we describe security functions available in GPRS, explaining authentication and encryption options, and evaluate how suitable it is for use in a Smart Grid environment. We conclude that suitability of GPRS depends on the chosen authentication and encryption functions, and on selecting a reliable and trustworthy mobile network operator.

L’attività di ricerca descritta nella presente tesi di dottorato si inquadra nell’ambito dello sviluppo di nuove tecnologie e sistemi di misura di tipo distribuito per la gestione delle smart grids, il miglioramento dei livelli di power quality e l’integrazione della generazione distribuita (GD) e dei sistemi di accumulo (SA) da fonti di energia rinnovabili nelle reti di distribuzione.
